About the Item
California born and educated sculptor Matt Gil graduated from San Jose State University, and his work has been widely exhibited throughout California since 1977. His sophisticated, subtle metal works are highly technical and refined, and his use of color and negative space are bold surprises. Matt Gil says of his process:
“The more I visualize the mood or the feeling of a particular piece, as well as the process of constructing a new piece, the easier it is to build. Sometimes it feels like the pieces build themselves. My sculpture-building process is like planning a trip, first I’m going here then I’m going there. If I get a bit lost I look at the drawing/map and I get back on track. Building sculptures has now become more and more entertaining for me with each and every piece, and I enjoy it when one piece generates many spin-offs. The time and place I grew up is reflected in my work. Each piece has called to me and jumped off the page of the sketchbook as if it was real and wanted to be in the world. All my sculptor heroes call out to me and say 'build this one,' or 'build that one,' or 'this piece needs more work and thought before you can make it.' 'Or maybe draw this one again and see that it has soul.Build it and give it a soul so that it will survive and live beyond me.'”
Gil has public sculptures permanently at The Palace Hotel. in New York, NY; Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, NY; Peninsula Hotel in New York, NY; Renown in Reno, NV; London Club in Las Vegas, NV; Yahoo! By Giuseppe Palumbo
Located in Napa, CA
Giuseppe Palumbo’s whimsical, anthropomorphic sculptures delve into the human psyche through irony, wit, and humor. By applying classical techniques to his contemporary subjects, Palumbo’s textured and spirited bronzes embody the essence of each being he portrays. The surprising humanization of common animals urges the viewer to identify with the creatures and forge surprisingly intense emotional connection with the artwork, shattering not only the barriers between viewer and artwork, but between human and beast.
In addition to Palumbo’s renowned collection of animals, Palumbo pushes the boundaries of the human experience even further with his exploration of shapes and objects. From small people...

Naiad
By Damon Hyldreth
Located in Napa, CA
The sculptures of Damon Hyldreth appear both static and fluid, rigid and flexible, strong and smooth, effectively blurring the line between nature and structure. By crafting organic forms from an obviously man-made metal, Hyldreth creates a unique symbiosis between nature and structure, unifying the sculpture and the surroundings through the free-flowing energy and architecture of his artworks.
Keeping in mind the intimate connection between artists and their tools, Hyldreth studies the potential energies of his metals and coaxes out exquisite forms and natural power. Using mainly stainless steel, as well as the occasional bronze and Cor-ten steel, Hyldreth allows his materials to dictate their final shape and become an ultimate collaboration between man and matter. The evocative forms subliminally draw the audience in, giving every viewer a deeply personal experience.
In 2004 Damon received his BFA in Sculpture from San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA. Public and private installations of Hyldreth’s work include the town of Palm Desert, CA, the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong, The W Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan, Trump Hollywood, Hollywood, FL Neiman Marcus, Houston, TX, Soffitel Hotel, Los Angeles, CA and the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza...

Small Bronze Corkscrew #16
By David Tanych
Located in Napa, CA
David Tanych has been building objects since his father gave him a saw, hammer, nails and a block of wood at the age of 10.
A veteran home and furniture builder, David turned his interest in design and fabrication from the functional and practical to the imaginative and artistic. Interested in welding and the properties of metal, David attended two summer sessions in blacksmithing at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, where he began to connect to a medium much different than wood.
Intrigued and inspired by the strength and flexibility of steel, Tanych started using it to construct functional objects such as tables, picture frames, and garden pergolas...

THE LAST DAYS OF NAPOLÉON BY
Located in New Orleans, LA
This highly evocative bronze by Vincenzo Vela captures the deposed Emperor Napoléon on his deathbed, holding a map of Europe and lost in thought about what might have been. Remarkable among most portrayals of the exiled leader, this highly detailed sculpture depicts Napoléon at his most vulnerable. Nonetheless, Vela perfectly captures his still-heroic bearing, which imparts to this work a monumental quality and quiet dignity. The mate to this figure is the colossal marble at the Musée du Château de Malmaison, which was shown at the Paris Salon of 1867.
The founder of the verismo movement in Italy, Vela was one of the great exponents of realism in sculpture. Born in Ligornetto, Switzerland in 1820, he studied under celebrated sculptor, Benedetto Cacciatori. He was also influenced both by the work of Tuscan sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, who seamlessly combined neoclassicism with naturalism and the romantic painting of Francesco Hayez...
