Highly detailed seascape by William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930). A wave crashes at the shore, glowing from the sun shining through. Above the wave, a few gulls glide across the scene. The rocks in the foreground and the cliffs in the midground are finely textured, adding a lovely sense of realistic detail. Signed "Wm. Blackman" in the lower right corner. Artist's stamp on verso, along with other inventory markings. Artist's name written on edge of canvas. Presented in an ornate wood frame with a linen liner and fillet. Canvas size: 18"H x 24"W William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930) was born in San Diego, CA in 1930. He spent most of his early years in West Los Angeles. Blackman began painting at age 12. In high school he majored in art so he could experiment with various mediums to find ways to interpret his ideas. In December of 1948 he joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He studied at Woodbury College where he learned advertising and graphic arts. In 1960 he bought a home with his wife Shirley in the San Fernando Valley and worked as an advertising manager. His position put him in contact with art directors and they would lunch together and then visit various art galleries in the area. He began oil painting again as a hobby. In 1964 he made an important contact through an associate at his agency. This person was a vice-president at Aaron Brothers Galleries and purchased paintings for them. They had showrooms in various major cities and sold original framed paintings to art galleries and furniture stores. He said they could possibly sell some of his seascapes so Bill began painting in his spare time. Gradually, they sold more than he could produce so Bill made the decision to leave the advertising business and devote his time to painting. Note: the original Aaron Brothers Art Galleries Certificate included with the painting. In 1965 the Blackman's moved to Thousand Oaks, California. He began his career as a fine artist and to this day resides in Thousand Oaks. He contracted with Aaron Brothers to be his exclusive agents and began specializing in seascapes. This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”. George Phillips (1890 - 1965) Regarded by some as “a poor man’s Garber” (“poor” needing to be redefined these days), S. George Phillips painted rich and colorful landscapes depicting views of the Delaware River and the environs surrounding New Hope. An extremely competent artist, Samuel George Phillips was born in Pennsylvania in 1890. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under William Merritt Chase, Cecilia Beaux, Hugh Breckenridge, and Daniel Garber. He then traveled to Europe to continue his studies. Phillips began his career as an illustrator and commercial artist. His work appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, The Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s, and The Liberty Magazine. His best known work as an illustrator was the Santa Claus logo he designed for the Whitman Candy Company. Around 1915, Phillips established a portrait studio in Philadelphia. Soon he was to become one of Philadelphia’s pre-eminent portraitists, painting many prominent socialites, politicians, and academicians. For fifty years, he commuted from his home in Atlantic City to his Philadelphia studio. Like many artists, painting was Phillips’s livelihood and although landscape painting was his passion, the bills were paid by money earned for commissioned portraits and illustration work. Phillips found portrait painting to be stressful and landscape painting to be relaxing, and as a result, he would frequently spend weekends in Bucks County, taking part-time residence at the Point Pleasant...
