American tonalist landscape by Alexander Helwig Wyant (1836-1892), "Moonlight" is oil on canvas and measures 10.19 x 15.19 inches. The work is signed by the artist at lower left. In 1860, Alexander Wyant left his native Ohio for New York City to visit George Inness, the Tonalist master who had awakened his artistic impulse. Inspired by the enchanting beauty of Inness’s paintings, Wyant sought his counsel and, with the aid of Inness’s patron, Nicholas Longworth, was able to remain in New York for one year. There, Wyant gleaned the ingredients for his own Tonalist style, which would make him one of the late nineteenth century’s most prominent landscape painters. He received additional training in Germany and England, learning the style of the Dusseldorf School, before returning to New York to establish his studio in 1867. Alexander Helwig Wyant was an Amercian landscape painter who greatly admired the works of Inness, Constable and Rousseau. Wyant went abroad in 1865, studying for a few months with the Norwegian painter Hans Frederik Gude, and visited both England and Ireland before returning to New York.
