Jenny Pohlman and Sabrina Knowles Art

American

Sabrina Knowles and Jenny Pohlman began their collaboration in 1992. The artists use a variety of materials in their rich assemblages, including hot-sculpted glass, various metal works, found objects and beads, achieving a fine sense of formal balance.

For Knowles (b. 1955) and Pohlman (b. 1960), three notable research field trips had a profound impact on their personal and artistic development: In 1997 they visited Zimbabwe and Botswana; returning to Africa they visited Ghana in 2000; and in 2002 they traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and East Africa. The pair gathered creative and emotional inspiration from these travels. These experiences are used to create sculptures that embody mythological stories in glass. Part of the narrative of the object is derived from the artists’ own travels and part by ancient cultures and magic of African life as witnessed by the two artists: “We have a point of origin and balance our elements within that framework.“

The work of Knowles and Pohlman is in the collections of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Flint Art Institute, Henry Ford Museum; Lowe Museum of Art, Miami; Mobile Museum of Art; Museum of American Glass; Museum of Glass; National Liberty Museum; New Bedford Museum of Glass; Racine Art Museum; Tacoma Art Museum; and Imagine Museum among others.

Layne Rowe, Rainbow Grenade, 2023 Hot sculpted glass, cut polished and assembled with solid gold daisy H14 x W7.5 x D6.5cm A seductive and vulnerable material, glass translates a potentially harmful object into a beautifully fragile art form. This piece advocates an alternative to the anger and conflict that fills our world. The stylised weapon has been hand-sculpted with precision to acknowledge the craft of weaponry. The piece’s accuracy has been achieved by creating hot-formed elements blown and sculpted as close to the required shape and size as possible, then cold worked with stone wheels and diamond tools...

Hole in the Wall
By Luke O'Sullivan
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This original piece by Luke O'Sullivan is made from wood that the artist has silkscreen printed onto with his original drawings and patterns, which he then cut and assembled into a three-dimensional, wall-hanging sculpture. The finished piece measures 14”h x 11.5”w x 4.25”d. About the Artwork O’Sullivan creates invented buildings, places, and objects describing unexplored worlds conjuring a sense of discovery and adventure. Rise and Shine represents a shift from the artist’s earlier work featuring structures, facades, and panoramic landscapes toward a more detailed approach. These new works depict encapsulated, floating environments devoid of humans. The sculptural objects are keepsakes or relics from these faraway places. Each piece plays with the shifting relationships between two and three dimensions, surface and underworld. O’Sullivan’s recent screen prints introduce color, imbuing these works with a certain levity and illustrative quality. The playful nature of O’Sullivan’s work draws from Nintendo games, maps, science fiction movies, and movie set design. Likening his process to a lego set...
