Rachel Burgess Paintings

American
Rachel Burgess is a visual artist based in New York. Originally from Boston, she received a B.A. in Literature from Yale University and an M.F.A. in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. Her interest in narrative and sequential forms continues to inform her work. She is the recipient of a 2021 Artist Development Program Award from the International Print Center of New York (NY); previous solo/two-person exhibitions include 3S Artspace (NH), Susan Eley Fine Art (NY), the University of Connecticut Art Gallery in Stamford (CT) and the Jonathan Frost Gallery (ME); previous group exhibitions include the International Print Center of New York (NY), 20/20 Gallery at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NY), the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (NY), the Monmouth Museum (NJ), the South Bend Museum of Art (IN), the American University Museum (Washington, D.C.), the Pyramida Center for Contemporary Art (Israel) and the Seoul Museum of Art (Korea). Burgess’ work has been supported by residencies at Acadia National Park and Zea Mays Printmaking, and has been featured in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Drawing Magazine, Introspective Magazine, 3x3 Magazine and CMYK. The coast of Maine has been the main source of inspiration for Rachel Burgess for many years. Using monotype, she creates iconic scenes that explore the relationship between experience and myth. By editing, abstracting, printing and reversing her landscapes, she gives physical form the process we perform internally when we convert our lives into stories. The results are places as seen through the mind’s eye, fabricated versions of real scenes. To make her work, Burgess begins by drawing outdoors, on location. She doesn’t use photographs because she wants to honor her instinctual editing choices, capturing her reaction to a place, rather than the place itself. Afterwards, in a print studio, she makes monotypes based on her drawings. Monotype is a form of printmaking that yields just one image. To make a monotype, Burgess applies oil-based ink to plexiglass plates, using rollers, Q-tips, tarlatan, paper towels and bits of cardboard to add and remove colors. The creation of the image must be accomplished in a day because the ink dries quickly. The pulling of the print, which takes a few minutes, is followed by a wiping away of the image from the plate. The initial “painting” is lost, and a new work on paper is created, mimicking the way we transform fleeting experiences into lasting stories. The final product is a mirror image of the original, a metaphor for the fictionalization and abstraction that occurs in our minds.

'Towards Le Scathe Cove'. Contemporary Landscape, Rural, Sea, Ocean, Beach Blue
By Sophia Milligan
Located in Penzance, GB
'Towards Le Scathe Cove'. Contemporary mixed media landscape painting, Cornwall Original Artwork, Unframed _________________ January morning, heavy swell and a strong southwester, rain imminent, sheltering beneath lichen furred granite outcrops. A plein air painting from the series 'Holan ha Dor' (Meaning 'Salt and Earth in Cornish). West Cornwall is a harshly beautiful peninsula, jutting out into the wild tireless ocean, shaped and moulded by powerful salt laden Atlantic winds, and criss-crossed by ancient, tangled hedgerows. Drawn to the immediacy of moments, underpinned by enduring narratives, Sophia's fluid expressive paintings explores the flux and balance in the nature of all things: The freedom of the air and solidity of the soil; Of anchored stone and rhythmic water; Of human narratives written in the wild landscapes; In the sensual interplay of light and shadow. They capture an essence of the equilibrium between wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; and the enduring and the effervescent. Mixed media on watercolour paper Signed and inscribed Unframed 23 x 30cm / 9 x 12 inches __________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in prestigious international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago...

tempio di Antonino e Faustina
Located in Milano, MI
Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. We often speak of a "brain drain," but in this case we are truly happy to be able to say that this is a "return," and an important one: an artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art...
