Rodney Forbes Figurative Paintings
Australian
Rodney Forbes lives in Gippsland, the greenest part of Australia. It’s a place of primeval forests dominated by the majestic mountain ash tree, the largest flowering plant in the world, and home to koalas and lyrebirds.
He grew up in the historic seaport of Williamstown, training as an electronics technician on ships, which left him with an enduring love of the sea. As a young man, he traveled overland from Australia via Kathmandu to Europe and his later research work in storytelling has led to visits to Sioux and Navajo communities as well as collaborative work with Australian Indigenous artists, academics and storytellers.
Forbes’ paintings combine full-bore colour, intriguing spatial manipulations, humour, and insightful observation of everyday life. They employ surreal juxtapositions which invite the viewer to attach their own stories and to reexamine their own sense of wonder. His works reward those who live with them, unfolding new layers of meaning over time.
His work is held in the collection of the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artbank, Regional Galleries and numerous private collections in Australia and internationally. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at Federation University Australia and was previously the Director of Gippsland Centre for Art and Design and Switchback Gallery at Monash University. His work has been the subject of two major curated survey exhibitions and he has been the recipient of an Australia Council Arts and Crafts Board New Work Grant. He was the winner of the 2020 Australian Maritime Art Award. RODNEY FORBES

DESCRIPTION
The painting Torero and Bull depicts a classic bullfighting scene, where a matador, elegantly dressed in a golden and violet traje de luces, performs a pass with the cape while the bull, wounded with banderillas, bows toward the ground. The composition conveys dynamism and tension, emphasizing the drama of the moment with loose and expressive brushstrokes.
The background is rendered in warm, diffused tones, contrasting with the deep black of the bull and the vivid hues of the cape. The thick brushwork and vibrant oil application enhance the sense of movement and emotion in the scene, a distinctive feature of Tuser Vázquez’s bullfighting paintings.

Parting (pet dog, bulldog, cowboy, animal portrait art, surrealist oil painting)
By Rudolf Kosow
Located in Quebec, Quebec
"Parting," a surrealistic painting by Rudolf Kosow, masterfully employs scale to create a poignant narrative of farewell. The canvas is dominated by the face of a bulldog, each hair and whisker intricately detailed, exuding a warmth and expressiveness that captures the essence of the breed. The bulldog's large, soulful eye, reflecting a quiet resignation, suggests an awareness of an impending separation.
Perched thoughtfully on the dog's snout, a diminutive figure of a man wearing a cowboy hat sits, his posture one of contemplative sorrow. The man dangles his legs over the edge of the snout, a symbol of the precipice between companionship and the solitude of parting.
Kosow's work deeply explores the themes of connection and departure. The intimate positioning of the man against the vastness of the dog's facial landscape evokes the shared history and emotional bond between human and animal. The painting's title, "Parting," may imply an imminent physical separation, yet the closeness of the two subjects suggests an unbreakable emotional tie that distance cannot sever.
In this piece, Kosow invites the viewer to consider the bittersweet moments of goodbye that are an intrinsic part of life's journey, highlighting the enduring nature of love that remains through any farewell. "Parting" is a testament to the poignant beauty found in the strength of connections that transcend the constraints of size and species.
