19th Century Lithographer's Limestone

About the Item

Nineteenth Century solid limestone lithographers stone. Two smooth printing surfaces with a rough exterior. Stenciled graphics on the edge, H 3 0. Limestone was used more commonly than glass, granite or marble because it was less likely to dull a blade. Limestone is a fine grained stone and defect free for use in the lithography discipline. Definitely a conversation piece or a wonderful plinth or base. Good overall condition with cosmetic wear due to age and use. Scuffs, scratches, minor chips, circular marks and a minor pressure crack or cut that is just on the exterior and does not affect its structure or stability (see photos). Approximately 9.88" x 12" x 3" high.

By Louis Sullivan, Stanford White
Located in Garnerville, NY
American terra-cotta Beaux Arts architectural block tile. The academic architectural style taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts incorporates French Neo-classicism with Renaissance and Baroque elements. This architectural piece is made of cast white glazed terra-cotta. Exquisitely detailed scroll and leaf pattern that can function incorporated into a building facade or a garden element. Good overall condition with some chips and overall crazing to the glaze, but structurally sound and sturdy. No structural cracks to compromise the integrity of the block tile. One of two architectural tiles offered here. This piece was found in the garden of a mansion in Poughkeepsie, NY. The tile came off of a building in downtown NYC...
