About the Item

A rare pair of terracotta sphinxes, one signed Chinard on the plinth, circa 1780. In private hands since the XVIII century, these works have certain similarities to the rare early known works from the artist : a pair of statuettes representing winter and summer, one signed and dated Chinard 1777 and the other stamped CHINARD / SCULPTOR (Série des Quatre Saisons exhibited by Chinard the 25th August 1786 at the Salon des Arts of Lyon – Sotheby’s Sale Paris, 25th 2003); a terracotta statuette on a plinth in deep blue marble representing an allegory of spring (Série des Quatre Saisons exhibited by Chinard the 25th August 1786 at the Salon des Arts of Lyon – Sale from the E. Strauss Collection – Paris, G. Petit Gallery, 3-4 June 1929 – Louvre Museum Documentation); a rare terracotta fountain from the château of Saint-Savin in Isère commissioned to the artist by the Menon de Ville, commander of Belle-combe of the order of Malta in 1784 (Georges Petit Gallery – Sale of 22nd November 1920 then Paul Gonvert succession sale, 10 May 1960 – Louvre Museum Documentation). Signed by the artist himself, these works are differentiated from the possible workshop productions stamped Chinard. Ancient restorations. A thermoluminescence test carried out on each piece establishes the average age of the last baking which is estimated at between 170 and 230 years (1778-1838). Biography : CHINARD Joseph or by error Pierre (Born 12th February 1756 in Lyon (Rhône) - Died 9th May 1813 in Lyon), active in the XVIII and XIXe centuries, French, sculptor of groups, figures and busts. Chinard was a pupil of Blaise. He went to Rome and won, in 1768, the prize founded by the pope on the subject of "Perseus delivering Andromeda". He started out at the Paris Fair in 1798 with "Child escaping the wreck by making a nacelle with the arms of love". Chinard, we see him, sacrificed in the style of the period. He acquired a rapid reputation and was professor at the Lyon School, corresponding member of the institute. He carried out a large number of busts, notably those of the Bonaparte family. In Bénénzit.
