Leedsware Classical Creamware Covered Chestnut Basket on Stand
A magnificent and elaborate 20th-century example of Classical Creamware by Leedsware, reviving the finest traditions of 18th-century English pottery.
This imposing covered basket features a complex "reticulated" (pierced) geometric design that covers the deep bowl, the domed lid, and the rim of the underplate. The lattice-like perforations are executed with mechanical precision, creating a delicate, airy appearance despite the sturdy earthenware body. The basket is flanked by twisted rope-form handles that terminate in applied floral and leaf clusters. The composition is crowned by a finial modeled as a textured pine cone or fir cone.

Underside: Impressed or printed mark: "LEEDSWARE CLASSICAL CREAMWARE ENGLAND".
Condition: Excellent condition. No chips, cracks, or restoration. The creamy glaze remains uniform and glossy.

This piece is a high-quality 20th-century production by Leedsware, a company dedicated to reproducing the famous "Leeds Pottery" creamware of the late 18th century. The form is a direct homage to the Georgian chestnut basket (or marronnière). In the 1700s, these pierced vessels were designed to hold roasted chestnuts; the reticulated holes allowed heat and steam to escape, keeping the nuts from becoming soggy, while the stand protected the table surface from the heat. Today, they are prized as grand decorative centerpieces or for serving fruit.
