About the Item

This is a substantial and heavy organic-shaped bowl in terracotta by Walter Addison. The abstract decoration is reminiscent of the pottery collaborations of F. Carlton Ball and Aaron Bohrod. The bowl, which measures 17" wide, 11.5" deep and 3.5" high. It's in very good condition with no hairlines, cracks or chips. There is a scar on the underside of the bowl and a few glaze pops (evident in photos) but these are from the time of glazing and firing. Some areas are more thinly glazed where the terracotta shows through--this results in more variation of the ground color. Signed ADDISON. Walter Addision was an accomplished illustrator and excelled at drawing, painting and sculpting. He was employed by the Bronx Zoo, where he made hundreds of drawings and watercolors of the exotic animals and painted murals for various exhibits. He also designed window displays for major New York City department stores. He later moved his family to Washington, CT. There, he exhibited at the Washington Art Association. Known more for his fine art, Addison was just as accomplished as a potter, and these works are quite rare.
