About the Item

Exceptional Indo-Persian iron casket intricately decorated using the Koftgari technique—fine gold wires hammered into the iron surface. Adorned with delicate Arabic calligraphy, the box was originally intended for storing a Qur’an. Originating from the Punjab region, likely Sialkot or Gujrat (in present-day Pakistan), dating to the second half of the 19th century. Reference: See: S. Markel, In Pursuit of the Intangible: Recent Exceptional Acquisitions of Southern Asian and Himalaya Art, in: Arts of Asia, 32:4, 2002, pp. 32–33.
