About the Item

A large rectangular box formed from green opaline crystal, its shape defined by flat planes and chamfered corners that produce an octagonal profile when viewed from above. The hinged lid mirrors the body’s outline and fits flush at the seam. A continuous gilt bronze mount runs around the midsection, functioning as both hinge and clasp. The mount is cast and chased with a repeating pointed-arch pattern bordered by narrow beaded bands, with a small thumbpiece at the front for opening. The interior is lined in the same green opaline crystal, with the gilt bronze mount framing the upper rim. This large Baccarat green opaline crystal gilt bronze mounted rectangular box is a product of the French crystal manufacturer’s 19th-century production. The opaque green coloration was achieved by combining lead glass with selected metal oxides, producing a uniform, dense body. The precision-cut form was crafted to tight tolerances to accommodate the fitted gilt bronze mounts, which were made using traditional casting and finishing techniques by specialist Parisian bronziers. Baccarat’s opaline boxes were designed as luxury objects, often mounted in gilt bronze for durability and decorative appeal. The construction of this example, with its thick crystal walls, reinforced mount, and secure hinged lid, is consistent with documented methods used for high-quality mounted opaline pieces. The combination of the smooth, vividly colored crystal body and detailed gilt bronze mount reflects the integrated approach between glassmakers and metalworkers in French decorative arts of the period. Hollywood Regency and it is in Excellent condition, can be used as a Tea Caddy, Jewelry box, or just a decorative accent on a coffee table, please note that the size of this is very unusual, large boxes of this scale were very difficult and expensive to produce and are very rare to find.
