About the Item

Early 19th Century Scottish Mahogany Longcase Clock with Arched Brass Dial An elegant and well-proportioned early 19th century Scottish longcase clock, dating to circa 1840. Crafted from figured mahogany with satinwood and inlaid detailing, the case features a broken swan neck pediment with brass finial and carved roundels above an arched hood with turned columns. The brass dial is richly embellished with cast gilt spandrels and a silvered chapter ring bearing Roman numerals. The arch is adorned with an engraved silvered roundel depicting a bird within a laurel wreath. Finely pierced blued steel hands mark the time, with subsidiary seconds and date dials. The trunk door is bow-fronted with decorative inlay, framed by reeded columns, and the base is panelled with contrasting inlaid quadrants. The clock houses an eight-day movement striking on a gong, and remains in working condition. Origin: Scotland Date: c.1840 Materials: Mahogany, brass, silvered metal Dimensions: Height: 89.5 in.
