This rare Irish clock by Sanderson is absolutely stunning with wonderful colour, gilding, proportion and presence. This type of clock is referred to as an Irish Chippendale by virtue of the unique carved frieze above the dial and this Sanderson piece has beautiful gilded carving on the frieze, Corinthian capitals and the bases of the hood pillars. This carving style is unique to Ireland and is not seen on clocks elsewhere. The clock face has an applied seconds dial, chapter ring and a semi-circular name cartouche. There is also a date aperature with a calendar ring and finely cast corner spandrels. The eight-day movement made by Sanderson has an anchor escapement, a rack striking mechanism which strikes the hours on a cast bell. The case itself is an interesting and unusual example of oak being utilised in the manufacture of an Irish longcase clock and it is very collectible for this reason. The case, the dial and the movement were all handmade in 18th century Dublin, involving the collaboration of a small number of highly skilled craftsmen. John's clock is in excellent condition, fully mechanically restored and is an exceptional example of its genre. This longcase clock displays a pleasing balance of the various skills employed in its manufacture and it exemplifies the expertise and know-how passed down to John Sanderson by his uncle and mentor. A wonderful piece of Irish history to have in your home. John Sanderson came from a family with a tradition of clockmaking. Geraldine Fennell notes in 'A List of Irish Watch and Clock Makers' that John's uncle Thomas Sanderson was a quarter brother in 1746. A Quarter Brother was a time expired apprentice or immigrant maker who was allowed to work, provided he paid fees every quarter to the Dublin Goldsmiths Company. Thomas Sanderson, being a Quaker was not permitted full membership of the Goldsmiths Company and had to be satisfied with his status as a paying Quarter Brother. Fennell goes on to list John Sanderson as a watchmaker who 'carried on business of Thomas, his uncle.' We can deduce that John Sanderson was a Quaker clockmaker working for his uncle Thomas in Meath St. and presumable his uncle trained him. When his uncle died in 1752, he left his business and premises to this nephew John in his will and John carried the business on.
