About the Item

A Swedish 19th century long case clock. This Swedish floor clock, circa 1820s, features a semi-circular column body with vertical fluting and faux marbling throughout. This clock retains it's original metal face, hands and movement. The head, with it's round face and wonderful aged detail, is encased within an architectural-style bonnet with four columns supporting the flat top. The column body rests on a stacked platform base, and this stately clock is raised up on ball feet. The door on the belly opens from right to left. The faux marbling of this clock is an overall off-white color with blue/grey veining and gold and bronze accents. Marble was quite scarce in Scandinavia, therefore cabinet makers from France and Italy brought the fashion to decorate with marble with them. Thus faux painting became stylish from manors to farmhouses during the Gustavian period. This clock has a flat backside, allowing it to sit nicely against a wall. This clock would be wonderful as a decorative object and is not currently in working condition, but can be quartzed to keep perfect time, for an additional cost. A quartz battery would then be added behind the face. The original hands are too heavy to carry the quartz movement, so they would be changed to black hands, similar in style. The clock would then chime (the chime can be turned off even though the sound is quite delightful.
