About the Item

A richly decorative French mantel clock, finely modelled in gilt bronze and mounted with exquisite Sèvres style porcelain with a cream ground. The central porcelain panel depicts an elegantly attired couple in 18th-century dress, seated in a pastoral setting, evoking the romance of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. An oval portrait miniature below shows a finely dressed lady in powdered wig and décolleté gown, painted in the style of Marie Antoinette. To the top of the clock is a porcelain urn, delicately painted with an image of the lady, the base of the urn encircled by a garland of floral sprays. The dial is beautifully decorated with gilt highlights and features Roman numerals within a gilt chapter ring. At the centre is a finely painted porcelain reserve depicting Cupid as a cherub, shown with wings outstretched, a quiver of arrows at his side, and holding a floral garland — a charming symbol of love and playful mischief. The gilt hands are elegantly pierced in the Louis XVI style, complementing the richly cast gilt bronze bezel with its beaded surround. the bezel is fitted with convex glass. The dial is signed Pitkin & Brooks, Chicago, indicating the prestigious American retailer who imported fine French clocks for wealthy clients at the turn of the 20th century. The French movement is of high quality and is by A. D. Mougin. It is in excellent, clean running order, having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The pendulum is a replacement. The movement runs for eight days and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. A demonstration video is available to both hear the strike and observe the clock in operation, please ask and we will send you a link. The case is presented in excellent condition. The original gilding remains exceptionally clean and bright, retaining a rich and pleasing tone, with only minor wear to the high points and slight areas of discolouration. The porcelain is likewise in excellent order, showing no damage and only light, expected wear to the overglaze gilt decoration. The urn exhibits a gentle forward inclination, an intentional feature of the original design. Adolphe Mougin was born in Badevel in 1835 into a family of watchmakers. His grandfather, Jean Mougin, was a master watchmaker in Fêche-l'Église, and his father, Jean-Pierre Mougin, served as a foreman at the Japy watch factory in Badevel before becoming the factory’s director of watchmaking. After working as a metalworker, likely at the Japy factory, Adolphe established his own large-scale watchmaking business in Héricourt in 1870. His company quickly gained recognition, receiving a medal at the Vesoul Exhibition in 1877, followed by two medals at the Paris World’s Fair in 1878 and 1889. A. D. Mougin clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate Pitkin & Brooks was a prominent glass and jewelry retailer based in Chicago in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were particularly well known as importers and wholesalers of fine cut glass, art glass, and decorative items, and they also retailed luxury goods, including clocks like the one in your photo. Founded around 1870, the company was active into the early 20th century. Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
