Empire ormolu clock signed Ravrio, 19th century circa 1805
About the Item
Patinated bronze and mercury gilt bronze mantel clock featuring a vestal virgin dressed in the antique manner leaning her elbows on the Love altar. The enameled dial is signed by Ravrio (bronze maker) and Mesnil (clockmaker). Early Empire production, 19th century circa 1805 - 1810.
Paris MAD (Decorative Arts Museum) exhibits the exact same clock with a small variant (Muse Erato holds a leaf in the hand) ; other variants show the young woman holding a stylus or the planter is replaced by a dog laying above the dial.
Andre Antoine Ravrio (1759 - 1814) is one of the greatest and most famous bronze makers of the French Empire together with Claude Galle and Thomire, official supplier to Emperor Napoleon. He was borne in Paris in 1759 and was graduated as a master in 1777. He opened his own workshop in 1790. His business was wealthy and very successful during French Empire : he provided Imperial palaces and some famous customers with his bronze work (prince Murat, Louis Bonaparte). He died in 1814.
Clockmaker Mesnil (short for Dumesnil), he collaborated on a very regular basis with Ravrio during Empire period. His work is known in some great French collections.
Beautiful, large model, very elegant proportions, stunning mercury gilt with a matte and shiny finish.
