Meissen Porcelain Strut Mantel Clock

About the Item

A Meissen porcelain oval shaped Strut clock with two putti and well modelled trailing flowers and wreath decoration. (The back of the case at 12 o’clock carrying the crossed swords mark for Meissen in a blue underglaze). Beautifully engraved silvered dial with Arabic numerals, fine blued steel hands signed ‘Howell, James to the Queen’. Eight day French movement with lever escapement and shuttered winding holes, circa 1870 Howell James and Co. Were founded in 1819 as jewelers and silversmiths soon establishing themselves as purveyors of fine quality pieces from their premises in Regent Street. They regularly exhibited at both the London and Paris exhibitions and became holders of the Royal Warrant. The firm ceased trading in 1911.
