White Marble French Clock, Dial Signed Lepaute, Marble Signed Franco Franchi

About the Item

White marble French mantel clock, the Carrara marble case carved with a figure of Minerva beside a pedestal, on Sienna marble base. Minerva stands with a helmet on her head and one of her muses, the owl, beside her to her right. The fine white enamel convex dial surrounded by an ormolu bezel in turn surrounded by a carved laurel leaf wreath and surmounted by trophies relating to her; scientific instruments, a lyre and books. The 8 day silk suspension movement with an outside count wheel striking on a bell. The white enamel dial signed Lepaute, Rue St Honore, No. 247, with Roman numerals, The marble at the rear of the case signed Franco Franchi, facet anno 1822. This ties in very well with the maker of the movement Jean-Joseph Lepaute who according to Tardy was working at the Rue de Richelieu in 1820 and moved to 247 Rue St-Honore in 1821. At this time he Clockmaker to the King and to the Chambre des Deputes. The movement is clearly dated 1823.
