A 19 C. French Japonisme Clock Garniture, Att. E. Cornu, Style of Édouard Lièvre

About the Item

A 19th-Century French Japonisme Three-Piece Figural Garniture Clock Set Attributed to Eugène Cornu, in the Style of Édouard Lièvre. Consisting of a mantel clock and a pair of matching vases. The set is constructed from patinated and gilt bronze with onyx elements. The clock has a rectangular marble case with veining in warm tones. The front features a circular bronze dial with Roman numerals, a pierced center, and two hands. The case is framed by vertical bronze mounts with applied floral patterns and figural elements. Two small bronze Chinoiserie figures in kneeling positions are affixed at the lower corners. The top is surmounted by a bronze censer-form finial with curved handles. The base is edged with a gilt bronze border featuring stylized lion masks and geometric patterns and rests on bronze feet. Each vase has a flaring gilt bronze neck and a bulbous marble body. The upper section is fitted with patinated bronze elephant-head handles with curling trunks attached to the shoulder. A raised bronze band with relief decoration encircles the widest portion of the body. The lower section features affixed gilt bronze standing figures in traditional attire. The base is stepped and set with a gilt bronze border matching the clock, incorporating lion masks and geometric elements. The vases rest on small bronze feet. France, Circa: 1870
