A 'Just' Book of Hours Clock
About the Item
An extremely stylish and beautifully made Livre D'heures Alarm clock, in the shape of a small book, the case made of gilded brass is engraved on all sides and beautifully fitted together. The eight day movement made by Angelus is in remarkable condition.
The case is stamp ‘JUST’ and was part of a limited number of clocks being produced Hour Lavigne in France with this trademark at the top end of the company’s production, this clock dates from the late 1940’s- early 1950’s.
Interestingly Just clocks were given as Trophies for the 1953 and 1955 Le Mans 24 hour races
Hour Lavigne and "JUST" clocks
Charles Victor HOUR, one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today (Google Hour Lavigne) began as an apprentice at 11 years of age. Twenty years later, he bought out a failing manufacture and in 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France.
Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the XIX C, Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees.
The company also manufactured clocks that were stamped with the brand name of some of the most prestigious jewellers such as Tiffany & Co. High-end jewelers in both America and in the U.K. did not normally manufacture the clocks they sold under their names, but sought out prestigious clockmakers to produce models with their brands stamped on the dial and the maker's name or logo on the movement.

Located in Amersham, GB
A superb example of a Eureka wall clock made c1911.
The electromagnetic movement is regulated by a large, slowly oscillating bi-metallic balance wheel, with the correct battery these clock will run for the duration of the battery life. Housed in a mahogany dial clock case with turned dial frame and brass bezel, the movement is visible through a cut out in the dial so the oscillation can be seen. The movement is numbered 5676 and stamped with the patent no 14614/1906 Made in England. The dial retains its original painted finish (cracked in places).
This is the only model of wall clock Eureka made and is one of the rarer designs as they mostly concentrated on mantel clocks.
