About the Item

A magnificent and finely cast palatial and very large French 19th century Japonisme three-piece ormolu garniture clock set attributed to Edouard Lievre. This striking and extremely unique clock set, inspired by the Japonisme movement that swept through France in the late 19th century, is composed of a central large unusual ormolu elephant figural mantel clock and a pair of fine five-light ormolu candelabras, each showcasing intricate Eastern motifs and exceptional bronze craftsmanship. The architectural Japonisme ormolu clock is centered by a boldly modeled Buddhist lion poised atop a domed tier with pierced fretwork and ornate scrollwork spandrels. Below, a square body displays a circular ormolu dial with raised Japanese-style numerals framed by pierced corner panels, while elegant elephant-head handles extend from each side, their curled trunks adding sculptural drama. The base rests on stylized bracket-form feet adorned with Greek key motifs, offering a firm and decorative foundation to the composition. A central elephant-head mount at the rear echoes the side detailing, creating a harmonious and balanced profile. Each of the large candelabra is equally impressive, rising from pierced, tiered bases to support a fluted urn body flanked by striking elephant-head handles. A coiled dragon figure, beautifully detailed with scales and wings, encircles the urn and supports the central standard. Six gracefully scrolling candle arms with foliate bobeches surround a fifth central light, all radiating from a finely cast knop. Relief cartouches on each urn depict serene Japanese landscapes—one with ducks swimming beneath a tree, the other with blossoming branches—adding poetic charm to the design. Entirely executed in richly ormolu gilded bronze, this extraordinary clock garniture set reflects the height of French aesthetic fascination with the East and stands as a rare example of Japonisme elegance married with opulent Louis-style bronze artistry. Edouard Lievre ( 1829-1886) was one of the greatest designers of the late 19th century. He was mostly known for his orientalist and japonism styles.
