French Mantel Clock
Paris, circa 1870
Black marble with gilt bronze mounts
Dimensions: H × W × D: 41 x 23 x 12 cm
Description:
Case in black marble with richly chased and gilt bronze decoration. The front is centered by a white enamel dial with Roman numerals and finely worked Louis XV hands, framed by an ornamental bronze bezel. A distinctive feature is the front glass, secured by a bayonet lock. The top is crowned by a finely cast gilt bronze tazza with scrolling handles and foliate ornament.
Background:
The movement is stamped Établissement Barbot, Paris, a noted Parisian maker active in the second half of the 19th century. In addition, the backplate bears the mark Médaille d’or, Japy Frères, referring to the gold medal awarded to this famous French firm at the Paris Exposition of 1855. The presence of these marks indicates a production date around 1870, when such collaborations between Parisian case makers and Japy movements were especially common.
Condition:
Movement complete and stamped, case with minor age-related wear. Original glass present, fitted with bayonet lock. Unrestored. Requires an overhaul of the movement.
