19th Century Antique Regency Mahogany Drop Dial Wall Clock by Barwise of London

About the Item

A fine quality early 19th century mahogany wall drop dial timepiece by this prestigious family of clockmakers. The fully signed white painted wooden 12 inch dial retains its original crackelure surface and gilt brass hands, the minute hand with counterpoise. The flat glass door has its original brass concave moulded bezel. The case is of beautifully patinated and figured mahogany with a curved drop base, shaped “ears” and door to reveal the pendulum for adjustment. The fusee movement has an anchor escapement and heavy brass bob pendulum.

A fine Regency longcase clock in the form of a domestic regulator in an architectural mahogany case with inset panels of satinwood and ebonized mouldings. The case of this clock shows the distinct influence of Thomas Hope, the eminent antiquarian and designer who was inspired by the Greek and Egyptian designs. The 12in square brass dial has a silvered finish and is engraved with Roman chapters and subsidiary second’s dial. The dial is signed within the lower section 'Barwise, London'. The eight day duration movement is of the highest quality, with five pillars, dead beat escapement, maintaining power and hour strike on a bell. The pendulum has a wood rod for temperature compensation with beat adjustment and rating nut beneath the brass bob. The clock is complete with the original brass cased weights.
