About the Item

Using an image from Owen Jones’ “The Grammar of Chinese Ornament” as inspiration, artist Molly Hatch has developed a new approach to deconstructing historic patterning and surface through an installation of triangular shaped wall tiles that create a large scale, three-dimensional ceramic lenticular. That pattern is hand-painted over an installation of 28 earthenware triangular bricks, the glazed surfaces collectively become a fragmented canvas for Hatch’s delicate, painterly re-rendering. From the left perspective the design is rendered in a deep teal and black motif while the right perspective continues the motif in brilliant gold luster and satiny black. In 2009, Hatch’s career took off after she was awarded the prestigious Arts/Industry Residency in Pottery at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin. Since then, Hatch’s work has been in high demand. In 2013, Hatch had a solo museum exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Alliance and was included in “New Blue and White,” a contemporary decorative arts exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 2014, Physic Garden, a monumental 456-plate work, was installed at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta as well as Caughly Landscape, another installation commissioned by the museum and the Woodruff Arts Center. Chronicle Books published Hatch’s first illustrated book of paintings in March of 2015. In 2016, the Clayarch Gimhae Museum in Korea exhibited a selection of wall installations by the artist. As Hatch can work on a commission basis, custom works may be requested. Momento, USA
By Molly Hatch
Located in New York, NY
Using ceramic surfaces as her canvas Hatch extends her historically-inspired contemporary repertoire with Memento, a wall installation comprised of 35 hands painted plates. The central image of the work, a large vase of vibrantly painted flowers is derived from 17th century Dutch painting, more specifically “pronkstilleven” (Dutch for ‘ostentatious still life’). Each round surface serves as a canvas for the artist’s brush strokes; together, the plates reveal the intricate abstract floral motif of their source material. Bridging the gap decorative and fine art the glazed surfaces of earthenware plates collectively become a fragmented canvas for Hatch’s delicate, painterly re-rendering. In the past decade, the name Molly Hatch has become synonymous with contemporary ceramics. Hatch’s ceramic installations...

Molly Hatch’s latest installation, Parallel, continues her process of deconstructing historic imagery through an installation of triangular shaped wall tiles that create a large scale, three-dimensional ceramic lenticular. The graphic work, with its painterly black and white pastoral scene, is further interrupted by a series of graduating lines rendered in gold luster along the left side of the installation. In the past decade, the name Molly Hatch has become synonymous with contemporary ceramics. Hatch’s ceramic installations...
