William Spratling Signed Sterling Silver Feather of Quetzalcoatal Taxco Bracelet
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage, circa 1940s signed sterling silver bracelet by William Spratling. This design is called Feather of Quetzalcoatl. According to "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide", by Phyllis Goddard, this bracelet was designed during William Spratling's first design period, 1931-1946. But first things first, who is Quetzalcoatl? According to this Wikipedia article, "The name Quetzalcoatl comes from the Nahuatl language and means "Precious serpent" or "Quetzal-feathered Serpent". In the 17th century, Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and historian of the Nahua people, wrote, "Quetzalcoatl, in its literal sense, means 'serpent of precious feathers' but in the allegorical sense, 'wisest of men'."" Ah! So that must be why Spratling called this design 'Feather of Quetzalcoatl! But hang on there, how did Spratling come to learn about Quetzalcoatl? Well according to the website Elisa Rolle, "When lecturing at the National University of Mexico's Summer School in 1926-1928, Spratling quickly integrated himself into the Mexican art scene and became a friend and a strong proponent of the work of muralist Diego Rivera, for whom he organized an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using money received from commissions he organized for Rivera, Spratling bought a home in Taxco, Mexico in 1928, where he began work on a book, Little Mexico, about this small mountain town. Spratling was gay, but most accounts of his life mention this only indirectly if at all. Spratling amassed a large collection of Pre-Columbian figurines...

Fish in a Fish, Blown Glass Sculpture, Antonio da Ros, Cenedese Murano 'Italy'
Located in Brussels, BE
Glass sculpture "Sommerso" designed by Antonio da Ros for Cenedese Murano in 1962 and presented during the XXXI Venice Biennale. Antonio da Ros used the Sommerso technique to create this glass sculpture. It represents a fish lodging itself in another fish. The inner fish is mainly dark pink but its color becomes lighter to form the tail of the bigger fish and the shape of the sculpture itself. An air bubble represents its eyes. The body of the main fish is represented by a gradient of green and blue-colored glass, itself submerged in light green colored glass. The eyes are represented by an air bubble and an inclusion of orange glass. A royal blue triangle separates the two fish. Like many old pieces edited by Cenedese, the sculpture is not signed. We contacted Ars Cenedese...

Venini Murano Fulvio Bianconi Tiepolo Head Figurine
Located in Brussels, BE
The Commedia dell’arte figurines are one of Fulvio Bianconi's most characteristic productions for Venini. Their creation can be dated around 1947-1948. The series, which originally consisted of twelve models, was exhibited at the 24th Venice Biennale in 1948. It is important to see this series of figurines as a cartoonish reinterpretation of the figurines that were very popular on the island of Murano in the 1930s. We recognize here the ironic touch of the work of Fulvio Bianconi who an illustrator was. Fulvio Bianconi uses here for each figurine a different costume and mask, the base is always made of lattimo glass decorated for polychrome glass costumes. Attitudes are also different for each character. We rarely find the heads of these figurines which were rare productions and out of catalog. Charming objects blown by masters outside the “regular” production. We present here the head of Giangurgolo, a figurine which bore the reference 2900 in the Venini catalog. The basic material of the lattimo glass head, the pink eyes...
