Pair of Ruby Red Glass Urns with Portraits, Bohemia, 19th Century

About the Item

Both pieces show remarkable similarities (both in the quality of the color of the glass and of the decoration and in the lines of the same ones) with Bohemian red glass urns, especially with works from Ludwig Moser & Söhne. Moser is a company that manufactures luxury glass objects located in Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic, before Karlsbad in Bohemia) still working nowadays (it was founded by Ludwig Moser in 1857). It also is a very popular name because of their creations made in the late 19th and circa early 20th century. Although Bohemia was a region known for its production of glass as early as the 13th century (especially when they discovered that by adding potassium they created a color clearer and more stable than that of the Italian glass), this activity became popular in the 17th century (although the term "Bohemian" or similar was already used a hundred years earlier to differentiate quality glass from this source), and it was especially noted in the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to important manufacturers for the quality of their materials and techniques and care in their designs. By the mid-19th century they already had a teaching system for the manufacture of glass, and in the second half they exported in large quantities very striking pieces (usually pairs of vases or vases of a single colour in opaque glass or two colors, decorated with floral enameled elements, painted details, sometimes lithographic techniques were used to copy famous paintings and translate them into works, etc.) created in large factories and in important quantities. • Size: 15 x 13 x 41 cms.
