"At the turn of the 20th century, the artists of the Swedish Rörstrand porcelain factory created some of the most beautiful decorative objects of the Art Nouveau period. Led by a formidable technical director, Robert Almström and his hand picked artistic director Alf Wallander, an elite design team was assembled. This assemblage grew into a creative force whose exquisite works astounded the artistic community. While England and the rest of Europe were under the spell of William Morris who fathered the arts and crafts movement, Rörstrand was transforming their craft into fine art. They took nationalistic pride in turning native flora and fauna into elegant three-dimensional objects of unsurpassed beauty. Organic forms were captured in the combination of painting, contour and movement. Many vases were rendered with sculpted rims, relief and open work and a pallet of subtle shades. These colors, unique to Rörstrand, held the distinct character of the mystical northern lights being explored by Nordic painters at the turn of the century. Rörstrand's artists showcased these vases at the great international expositions of the period, gaining notoriety in the company of such factories as Tiffany and Gallé.
