About the Item

Originally made for the restaurant Nybrokällaren in Sweden, these lights display formal qualities that suggest they may also have been conceived with a church or ceremonial setting in mind. Their calm, architectural presence reflects a careful balance between restraint and expression, allowing the fixtures to sit naturally within the spaces they illuminate. For Carl-Axel Acking, lighting represented a synthesis of function, atmosphere, and form. Contemporary writing often highlights his luminaires for their ability to operate as integral architectural elements rather than as isolated sources of light. Model 981 is a clear example of this approach. The reflector produces a soft, ambient glow, while fine perforations in the shade allow delicate slivers of light to escape. At the same time, concealed and shielded light sources positioned between the reflectors provide effective general illumination. Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) belonged to the generation of Swedish architects who, during the 1930s and 1940s, shaped what became known as Swedish Modern, combining functionalist principles with more measured, humane forms.
