Charles Schneider was an Art Deco glass artist, born in Elzas, Germany in 1881. Later Schneider moved to Nancy, one of the most important cities in eastern France at the time. In 1898, Charles Schneider was employed by the Daum glass company, in 1902 his brother Ernest joined him. While Ernest was better known as a figure in the business world, Charles chose to invest in his creative talents. He began to take courses in engraving, decoration, drawing and modelling, under the skilful wings of Henri Berger i.a.. In 1904, he applied to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and later to Paris. During his training he began to produce a number of bronze Art Nouveau statues, all signed 'Ch. Schneider-Nancy”. Due to the rarity of these sculptures, the objects today have great value. In 1906, Charles organized his first series of exhibitions in Paris. In a number of records it can be found that Schneider was known to design vases independently. These developments partly explain why Charles and Ernest set up their own business, after investing in a small glassworks in Epinay-Sur-Seine in 1913, under the name “Verreries Schneider”. Besides producing the most common types of laboratory glassware and bottles to support the financial operation of their business, they began to introduce the series of glassware incorporating naturalistic designs in a new style.
