Fantastical Blown Glass and Cast Bronze Thorned Table Lamp entitled 'Illumination Machine' by Brecht Wright Gander, a Rhode Island-born, New Jersey-based artist and designer known for his experimental work that inserts the functional into sculptural pieces of art. This piece was originally commissioned for a 2021 exhibition entitled 'Cast Iron', in which eight artists from around the world were tasked with digitally designing exclusive editions of furniture, lighting or functional decorative objects, which the gallery would then facilitate production of, with the help of a fourth generation foundry in Virginia. Each of the digital pieces would be materialized in cast iron, the quintessential symbol of the 19th century. The focus of the exhibition was to marry the material’s origins with the new-age digital hyper-connectivity of design ideas. On the design process of this piece, the artist writes: "Here’s what I see on YouTube: men working with preternatural, focused speed to trowel grooves into the red clay they stand on. The grooves form a gridded shape. They carry a steaming crucible of molten iron to the marked place and pour it onto the earth – just beside their unshod feet. Minutes later they are lifting up a just-made section of iron gate. This takes place, I gather, in India. It’s a process that has immense appeal – carve and pour – what satisfying immediacy! Connecting Iron to gates is, for me, one of the most immediate material associations I have. Brooklyn is full of them. If Manhattan is your more familiar environ, you might think of the cast iron facades of Soho. Iron gates and grilles also connect to another process I’ve been thinking about recently – bound glass. This is an Italian technique for creating bulbous, multi-lobed glass forms. A metal cage is prepared and the molten glass blown into this cage until it becomes a swollen expression of negative space. It was with these two processes in mind, and in combination, that I made Illumination Machines 3, 4, and 5." — Brecht Wright Gander About the Artist: After graduating with a major in foundational philosophy, Gander apprenticed in a boutique architecture firm before launching his design collection in 2017. In 2018, he was an NYCxDesign Emerging Designer of the Year honoree and exhibited at Salone in Milan and at Design Miami. In 2018, he was an honoree of Sight Unseen’s American Design Hot List and named one of Interior Design Magazine’s 15 Rising Stars of Product Design. In 2020, his work was exhibited at Design Museum Gent. His first solo show opened in Shanghai in 2021. Gander’s work has been featured in Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, Luxe Magazine, Metropolis Magazine, Surface, and Cultured Magazine.
