About the Item
English regency period, possibly Irish, neoclassical style convex mirror of good size having giltwood and ebonized frame; the elaborate cresting with ancient Roman Army iconography of ebonized handled swords behind gilt shield above crossed fasces and stacked cannonballs with draped ebonized flags or banners behind, surmounting round frame housing original convex mirror glass with ebonized laurel leaf and berry border and fluted fillet. It is signed and dated 'Arthur Williams November 1813' and is unknown if Mr. Williams was the maker or the name of the client, however a rare and wonderful bit of information. If Williams not the maker, the design certainly relates to the Napoleonic wars of which he could have been involved and this a commissioned piece or reward for valour or service. A truly beautiful and fascinating example.
