About the Item

A Very Attractive Late Regency Period Country House Type Circular Giltwood And Gesso Convex Mirror Of Relatively Small Proportion, Having Attractive Carved Shell Surmounted To Top, Over Moulded Frame Enclosing Ebonised Reeded Slip And Original Mirror Plate.  A nice example of a regency period convex mirror, the elegance of which is largely contained within the relatively simple design. It boasts a nice colour and lustre to the surface of the gilded frame and the shell is a particularly nice, unusual feature. It would really look great and add a little something on the wall in just about any room it finds itself. It is also a little smaller than normal which is nice and helps to broaden the variety of spaces which it can be hung in. It is of course still large enough to have a bit of presence about it though. Overall it remains in very good condition and the gilding has aged nicely, taking on that lovely golden lustre over time. One would imagine that the mirror has hung in one place for a large part of its life as there are very few repairs, or damaged areas to speak of at all. There are of course various old marks, scuffs, scrapes and rubbed areas, all of which are commensurate with age and add to the overall character of the piece without detracting from it aesthetically in the slightest. We also believe that the mirror plate itself is original and it has various evidence of old silvering and pitting marks as can be seen in the images. The original purpose of convex mirrors was to reflect and spread the light source into as many parts of a room as possible and this in turn can often make a room feel significantly bigger. Circa 1830. Height 25.25in. Width 18in. Depth 3in.
