Modern Sofas
MODERN STYLE
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”
Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.
Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair — crafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.
It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

And the ornate backdrop of the gallery’s home, the 14th-century Palazzo Brancaccio, serves as a potent reminder that it’s possible we always have.
Maxim Scherbakov, who works under the studio name Supaform, says that he developed the new collection “as a result of a careful visual search for the frontiers of comfort,” seeking to celebrate “beauty for no reason,” he says. His floor lamp has no bulb, his coffee table is too bumpy to hold a glass upright, and his desk has trick drawers and a gap in the middle where its writing surface should be. Yet his various seating elements look no less functional than, say, Rick Owens’s, and Scherbakov has a compelling raison d’etre: Also a longtime painter, he pulled all of the works directly from his canvases, making them a literal elision of the two-dimensional realm and the three. If he can celebrate fantasy and feeling in one of them, he wondered, then why not the other?

Where the St. Lawrence River Mon-treal flows in a serpentine pattern, a residential complex marked by the architectural style of brutalism rises up on a small headland – the famous Habitat 67. 354 concrete blocks arranged in a stepped pattern adorn a part of Montreal’s multifaceted skyline, designed by architect Moshe Safdie for Expo 67. Not far from this memorable silhouette grew up Philippe Malouin, who was inspired by these forms of brutalism through-out his life. After Malouin received the call from de Sede and initial ideas were exchanged, the designer was largely given a free hand and Malouin started his work “by making things”. Simply drawing, cutting or even folding different materials are part of the creation of the new sculpture DS-707. Philippe Malouin experimented with folding foam for the Swiss manu-facturer - the result: a modular sofa system with a traditional yet con-temporary aesthetic. Carried by the sweeping serpentines of the river, the idea for a sculpture that fuses into one form was born in the London studio near the Thames. The masterpiece DS-707 is a homage to classic de Sede designs and was created for the future.
The DS-707 is the modern composition of handmade leather and contemporary design. The flowing, soft transitions combine the postmodern era of Swiss furniture design with the clear, open structures of brutalism that inspired designer Philippe Malouin. Available as a comfortable armchair or as a modular sofa that can be combined in infinite ways, the DS-707 is the visual perfection of form that gives every room a unique highlight. Skyfolding In-outdoor collection, the collection concept is inspired by the Asian building scaffoldings, where a structure is composed by bamboo sticks crossed to create this inspiring and fascinating structures. This very rare fiberglass loveseat sofa is by Tue Poulsen for Domus Danica, circa 1970, and is one of approximately 80 pieces within a collection of fiberglass furniture that were produced for a design exhibition at the Bella Center in Copenhagen Denmark. The cushions have been newly upholstered in dead stock (never used vintage) Pierre Cardin fabric.
This settee sofa, also referred to as a double lounge chair, was accompanied with other living room furniture for this collection which included a lounge chair, sofa, chaise lounge and tables. The voluptuous shapes were created in Poulsen's ceramic workshop, and pays homage to the ceramicists skills and vision in his tenured career as a sculptor and artist.
Included in the photo gallery is a photo of Tue Poulsen with a chair example of the same design. In the same photo is documentation of the chair design and production photos when the chair was originally conceptualized and created, provided by Tue Poulsen to dealer/collector 'Deerstedt' (photo credit also to 'Deerstedt').
