Antique Serpentine 4-Drawer Walnut Veneer Commode from Southern Germany, C. 1750
About the Item
Truly the work of a master-level woodworker from Southern Germany, this four-drawer commode has a unique serpentine shape. Hand-carved (circa 1750) with a sinuous front, the chest of drawers has a beautiful burl walnut veneer that accentuates the supple façade. The wood has a honey-brown hue, pronounced burl grains, and a high sheen that exudes elegance.
Each of the drawers has a bronze Rococo-style key plate of an asymmetrically shaped scalloped leaf, flanked by a pair of drop handles with floret mounts. The sweeping shape of the drawers are matched by the overhanging top with quarter-round edges, while the thick apron has a cavetto cornice that enhances the curvaceousness of the commode. Supported by two bun feet in the front and two block feet in the back, our serpentine commode from Southern Germany would elevate the décor of any bedroom.

18th Century Walnut Wood Crossbow Commode from Provence, France
Located in Dallas, TX
In French, arbalete means “crossbow” and is typically used to describe the shape of furniture when the frontage has been carved in a sinuous manner. When the profile is viewed from above, it resembles the European Medieval crossbow. In the case of this walnut commode from Provence, the form is double arbalete.
Two iron swag handles are affixed to each of the three stacked drawers by parted shell mounts. In between the pulls is a sinuous plate that surrounds a keyhole. Each drawer maintains the arbalete structure created by the thinly molded top. The apron is highly shaped, with many small arbaletes strung together. In the center is a gadrooned leaf and floret medallion surrounded by volute scrolls.
The sides are straight but consist of recessed rectangular panels with asymmetrical tops...
