About the Item

A handsome French Empire walnut and fossil-marble commode from the 19th century. The dark stone top reveals tiny inclusions of fossilized marine life, like constellations in the night sky. An overhanging frieze is a shallow drawer, incorporating a shield escutcheon for a non-existent lock, using brass knobs to open. Between the half-round column at the sides are two spacious drawers with the same brass knobs however no key is present for the old locks. The drawer fronts are animated by the amber-toned grain of the walnut that give the piece a sense of movement and warm color, which still reveal the saw marks from being milled by hand nearly two centuries ago. Columnar pilasters on each side are elevated by tall, block feet. Tightened, cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, this fabulous commode is ready for your interior. Make sure to view the detailed images for a closer look.
