About the Item

An attractive and versatile, space-saving Arts & Crafts solid oak bureau-bookcase in lovely antique condition. Most likely made around 1900 in England, this slim 'student’s' offers a workspace and a bookcase with storage and display function, all in a lovely Antique Arts & Crafts antique piece. However and wherever its used, it will add lovely two-tone colouring, bygone quality and artisan appeal to any interior. Slim but sturdy and reassuringly heavy, this traditional bureau is made from gorgeously two-toned regular and golden oak showing lovely grain throughout. It has a handy oak-lined drawer flanked by slide-out desk supports, a locking desktop which pulls down to reveal a variety of useful workstation cubbyholes, two lower bookshelves and an upper gallery, ideal for display purposes. Crafted with charming, understated embellishments, it features a shapely upper gallery with a pierce-carved heart, topped by carved finials, which beautifully complements the pierce-carved, shapely apron beneath the drawer. Below the lower shelf are shapely, supportive corned braces, while the sides stand on lovely arched feet. The front features metal pulls for the slide-out desk supports, lovely metal handles and decorative metal keyhole escutcheon. With its good-size desk area, this piece is ideal for furniture lovers looking for a stylish and distinctive occasional or laptop desk, which can double as a console or occasional table with bookcase and storage capacity. All in all this is a very charming and versatile Arts & Crafts oak bureau, which will fit almost anywhere, adding lovely two-tone colouring, bygone quality and a distinctive, traditional aesthetic wherever and however its used. CONDITION This bureau-bookcase is in good antique condition. Structurally sound, sturdy and reassuringly heavy, it has to be expected marks and bumps to show its age and has a working desk locking mechanism with smooth pull-down desk and slide-out desk supports. Both rear side feet appear to have undergone hard-to-notice historic repairs, so it is advised not to drag when moving, and also to slide-out the desk supports before lowering the desk, so as to not overload the hinge mechanisms. Overall it’s a very charming Arts & Crafts bureau in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should be just as attractive and useable for generations to come – please see the photos.
