About the Item
Maria Pergay’s "Gerbe" oval center table was designed in the late 1960s, and embodies the boldness that made her a key figure of French design. A pioneer in the use of stainless steel, Pergay revealed an industrial material in a new light. This once rigid and cold material becomes fluid and dynamic, poetic in its radical reimagining of form.
The base, a composition of a dozen steel blades fanning outward from a sculpted interior, seems to open in a centrifugal movement, evoking both a bouquet and a frozen explosion, almost in a state of deconstruction. More than a simple base or support, this table asserts a sculptural presence, demonstrating how Pergay transcended function to transform furniture into an architecture in motion.
