About the Item

An impressive Dutch Art Deco side table in oak and oak veneer, dating from the 1920s and exemplary of Amsterdam School design. This geometric piece features an octagonal top with quartered oak veneer, enhancing the play of light. Beneath, a lower shelf echoes the octagonal form, enhancing balance. The strong vertical lines of the square legs are accentuated by blackened slat details and ebonized feet - bold contrasts typical of Amsterdam School design. The table’s sculptural presence, combined with its practicality, makes it an exceptional example of Dutch Amsterdam School craftsmanship. This table works beautifully as a side table or occasional accent. Its architectural lines and deep oak tones lend themselves equally well to classic interiors, eclectic settings, or contemporary spaces seeking a touch of historic character. Good vintage condition, with warm patina and light wear consistent with age. ''Amsterdam School'' is a collective name for the exuberant, imaginative and innovative design style from the period 1910-1940 by a diverse group of Dutch architects, interior designers and sculptors. Influential architects and designers include Michel De Klerk, Hildo Krop, Piet Kramer and many others. The Amsterdam School embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre. Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
