Bentwood Welsh Oak Side Table By Dylan Glyn

About the Item

Exquisite handcrafted steam bent Side Table in Oak by Welsh designer/maker Dylan Glyn This captivating side table is the work of contemporary Welsh designer and furniture maker Dylan Glyn, whose flowing designs are informed by his fascination of bending and shaping timber primarily through high temperature steaming. Movement is a recurring theme in his work which is blended with an interest in timber structure and construction that evokes strong sculptural forms. The distinctive bentwood tripod base of the ‘Sŵs’ side table is a prime example of Dylan’s aesthetics. Each leg is shaped from a single piece of ash, meticulously turned with a tapering shape and then steam-bent to create a graceful, floating silhouette. The unique C-profile of the legs are hand crafted, lending to strong flowing sculptural quality to Dylan’s design. For Dylan, the beauty of wood should be appreciated in all its natural forms, and this ethos is reflected in the materials he uses. The table is crafted from local & sustainably sourced oak with its distinctive character. Rather than using bland featureless timber, Dylan allows the inherent character of his local wood to shine through, with knots, grain patterns, and other unique markings left visible to tell the story of the environment where the trees grew. Each ‘Sŵs’ side table offers a unique window into the life of the tree from which it was made, imbuing the piece with an organic, one-of-a-kind beauty that tells a story between the Welsh mountainous landscape and the designer who has crafted each piece. Measuring 18 inches wide x 19 inches high, this side table provides generous surface area while maintaining a graceful, understated presence. Its clean-lined design and artful bentwood base make it an ideal accent piece for living rooms, bedrooms and entryways, adding both functionality and sculptural styling to your home. Made in Cymru/Wales, the collection is named ‘Sŵs’ - a nod to where the tables are made in his village of Caersŵs. The name is derived from the Welsh place name elements ‘Caer’ and ‘Sŵs’. ‘Caer’ translates as ‘fort’ - and ‘Sŵs’ is both the Welsh word for ‘Kiss’ and the name of the ancient local Celtic Queen and leader Sŵswen who fought the Romans. Crafted to the highest standards of quality, each ‘Sŵs’ side table is finished with a durable, low-sheen hardwax oil that enhances the natural lustre of the wood while providing protection against daily use. Please check availability at time of order, some pieces in stock otherwise handmade to order on a 4-6 week lead-time. Other pieces available in the collection, pictured here with small coffee table. Items can also be commissioned in other wood types including Ash and Cherry or with leather inset tops. For more details about this service please get in touch.
