Alms or almsgiving involves giving to others as an act of Virtue, either materially or in the sense of providing capabilities free. It exists in a number of religions and regions. This beautiful plate was used at the church to collect donations and contributions. In design today it could hand on the wall as a piece of art on top of a semainier of cabinet, it could be placed on stand that sits on a console or table. The beautiful deep lines and carved shapes makes this piece unique and special. The word alms comes from the Greek word eleemosyne, which means "compassion or pity," and is itself from the word eleos, which means "mercy." If you think about German Baroque, you probably think about Johann Sebastian Bach and classical music. But the Baroque in Germany was a time for architecture as well; beautiful palaces and gorgeous churches that seemed almost unreal were built during that time.
The Baroque is a period in history started in Italy after the Renaissance. It was a new artistic style defined by the abundant use of ornaments and the combination of different arts. It was first developed with the intention to exhibit the power of the Catholic Church to the Protestant groups. Baroque architecture started to develop in Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries. German Baroque took elements from both Italian and French Baroque architecture. Thus the shapes you see on this art piece. Show a great exuberance. They were meant to impress and show the power of either the church or the king, so they were highly ornamented. In terms of the plan layout for churches and cathedrals, we see an important change from the Renaissance with the introduction of new geometric shapes. The ellipse and the oval organized elements in the composition. This new geometry gave origin to undulations, concave and convex walls, and very dynamic spaces. The facades of churches were volumetric, with abundant elements coming in and out, also looking to create that sense of movement.
