How can you tell if pottery is Hopi?

1 Answer
How can you tell if pottery is Hopi?
One way to determine whether pottery is Hopi is to look at the rim. Hopi artisans use a coil and scrape method that gives pieces level rims with a rough surface. If a piece of pottery has a raised rim or a smooth edge along its rim, the piece was likely produced with a potter's wheel and is not an authentic Hopi piece. Many convincing reproductions do exist, so it's a good idea to have a certified appraiser evaluate pottery when trying to assess its authenticity. Find a range of Hopi pottery on 1stDibs.
