Albert Hirschfeld (1903 - 2003)
Albert Hirschfeld is known for his pen and ink personality caricatures of theatre people. He worked as the theatre caricaturist for The New York Times. Hirschfeld had won numerous awards including one special Tony Award in 1984.
Hirschfeld was born in St. Louis and moved to New York at age 12 where he studied at the Art Students League. In 1924 Hirschfeld moved to Europe to study painting, sculpture and drawing at the Academy Julian. Hirschfeld became a notable figure in the New York art and theatre scenes. To become one of his subjects was considered a special honor. Hirschfeld often hide the word “NINA”, the name of his daughter, in the lines of his caricatures.
