About the Item
Artist Comments
This piece was largely inspired by the artwork of the late artist John Nieto. I have admired his large, colorful, graphic depictions of animals and Indians since before I began painting. In this piece, I wanted to pay equal attention to negative and positive space, filling the elephant's form with light and color. I also wanted to reference another favorite art form of mine, beautiful African mud cloth prints, which appears in this piece in the sun behind the elephant. Original watercolor on Arches 300lb paper. There is a white border around the artwork for easier framing. The actual size of the artwork image is 17.8 x 13.8.
About the Artist
Amy Rattner is a Bay Area artist who paints vibrant animal portraits inspired by the American southwest. Her acrylic and watercolor paintings use strong lines, vivid colors, and symbolic patterns to convey the spiritual, mythological, and cultural significance of various animals. After receiving her BA and MA from Stanford University, she began her artistic career as a graphic designer. The vivid, stylized quality of her work today reflects her background. Amy is interested in examining the influential role that animals have played through different cultures and societies.

- Dragonfly and Port Wine Magnolia, Original PaintingBy Catherine McCargarLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Artist Catherine McCargar displays a scarlet dragonfly landing on the branch of a magnolia bush. She captures the fleeting moment as it sips nectar from the flower. Its red wings match the fully bloomed magnolia, fittingly complementing the verdant green leaves. Catherine effectively uses organic curved lines to draw the viewer's eye through her intricate arrangement of buds, blooms, and leaves.About the Artist
