About the Item

" I often compare my drawing and painting with the brush with graffiti and other forms of street art. I enjoy the spontaneity of writing with the brush and see my work as an attempt to contribute to that perceptually formal and historically refined space of painting. I’ve lived all of my life in two of the largest cities in Canada; Montréal (where I was born) and Toronto where I’m currently based. I’ve had studios in the downtown, urban cores of each. As a result, I am and have been exposed to graffiti on an ongoing and frequent basis. I see street art as an alternative to the current gallery system and as a way to bring art to the public. I enjoy the plurality and non-judgemental aspects of it, of its ability to spread throughout and on surfaces that become available to it. It is organic and sustainable. In my work, the act of writing/drawing/painting with the brush is what sustains me; the physical traces and evidence of human interaction with the surface. With my newest work, I’ve taken a direction away from using text and cursive writing to using a repetitive and singular cursive line. The aim was to allow me to focus on refining the brushstroke and simultaneously slowing down the speed with with I approach my painting activity; the formal repetition of this interest providing a platform for future works. On a conceptual level, I see the new works as part of a series, rather than individual paintings. As a result of a more nomadic studio life this past year, I’m evolving alternative practices such as drawing, writing with acrylic markers on paper and smaller paintings on wood. I see my practice as a painter continuing to evolve depending upon the resources I have and the conditions of existence in which I find myself. " statement from the artist Montréal born, Anne-Marie Cosgrove is a contemporary artist based in Toronto. She holds an MFA, York University and a BFA, Concordia University. In April and May of 2019, Anne-Marie lived and worked in a two month artist residency at PADA Studios in Barreiro, Portugal. Concurrently, her works were exhibited in I Could Go on Forever, an international curated group exhibition at PADA Gallery. Anne-Marie has exhibited in solo/group exhibitions in Venice, Madrid, Montréal, Toronto, New York, Miami, Seattle and others. Recent exhibitions include Hide-and-seek, Espacio Contemplacióne, Madrid; Esthète, Galerie Erga, Montreal; ‘Should I stay or should I go?’, Barbecho, Madrid; OSA Juried Annual, Toronto. Recognition for her work includes various awards from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. Anne-Marie’s work has been reviewed online and in print publications such as Vanguard, Matriart: A Canadian Feminist Art Journal, ArtWord: Artists Forum, Artcentron, ArtFuse and ArtsObserver. Corporate collections include Linea Solutions (2019) Toronto; Clarica Corporation (2002) Montréal; York University, Office of the President (1990), Toronto and private collections in Canada, the US and elsewhere.
