About

Medina investigates structures such as architecture, character, language, image, and culture. Through drawings, sculptures, videos, and performance she pulls these structures apart, pieces them back together, and makes them hers. Her practice is activated by self-improvement and habitual practices such as incantations and meditation. Medina’s artistic practice is a spiritual one in which geometry reveals universal intelligence and daily practices cultivate personal growth. Hip-Hop, abstraction, and new age thinking inform the work.

The Black Alphabet Series creates a visual language that combined geometry, graffiti, architecture, and hip-hop culture. The series's geometric shapes are taken from hip-hop's iconic image the boombox and it's influenced by different hand-styles in graffiti, the floor mosaics of Roman cathedrals and the Roman alphabet.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, Glendalys Medina is an
interdisciplinary artist receiving her MFA from Hunter College in 2008.
Medina’s work has been exhibited at such notable venues as PAMM, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Kitchen, New Museum, Artists Space, Bronx Museum and El Museo del Barrio.

She was awarded a SIP fellowship at EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in 2016, a BACK IN FIVE MINUTES artist residency at El Museo Del Barrio in 2015, a residency at Yaddo in 2014, the Rome Prize in Visual Arts in 2013, a NYFA Fellowship in InterdisciplinaryArt in 2012, and the Bronx Museum's Artist in the Marketplace residency in 2010.
