Gretchen Wagner
'Color Interaction IV (9)' - color theory, glass beads, bright, saturated, grid

2024

About the Item

This piece features hues of peach, blue, and purple. Atlanta-based artist and designer Gretchen Wagner is influenced by the use of color and their interactions. Her most recent body of work, “Color Interactions IV,” challenges our ability to focus and perceive a single color independently. This is her fourth iteration of works inspired by Josef Albers' interaction of color exercises and Anni Albers' approach to repetition in textile design. The works are a love letter to both artists and their practices which integrated craft, design and art. This series is inspired by her curiosity and research on the relativity of color. They are created more like prints in their seriality and approach to independent layers that utilize different processes. The first layer(s) are fifteen concentric shapes painted in increasingly saturated watercolor. The vertical focal point is airbrushed with a concentrated watercolor before being embroidered with a network of glass seed beads. The final embellished layer is designed to create the illusion of a transparent overlay, akin to an open weave / textile. In combination, the different layers create independent color interactions while challenging our eyes ability to focus. Throughout the composition there are soft and translucent edges which appear out of focus while the hard edges of the embroidery and airbrushed accents create intentional moments of high contrast. Each layer challenges our eye’s ability to specify any one color relationship or identity when so many variables are changing simultaneously. Gretchen received a BFA in Fibers and an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design where she is currently a Professor of Foundation Studies, using color as both medium and content in an effort to re-integrate fine art and applied design.
