Coming of age in the 1970s, with its reappraisal of minimalist imperatives, he has worked with the pristinely geometric and the primordially biomorphic but most characteristically, his sculpture exists in the area between, alluding to both.” “Ultimately, however, he is more of a materialist – even a sensualist – than he is anything else…and has more in common with the classic modernism of Constantine Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi than with Donald Judd. or Sol Lewitt. Highstein’s numerous projects include monumental sculptures, towers, pavilions and amphitheaters in both public and private spaces. In 2005, a group of his sculptures was exhibited in Madison Square Park, New York, sponsored by the Madison Square Park coalition. In 2003, Double Pipe Piece (1974) was installed at P.S. 1 MOMA. Highstein is included in the permanent collections of numerous museums among them: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Dallas Art Museum; the Fogg Museum, Harvard University; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Jene Highstein was born in Baltimore, MD in 1942. He received his BA in Philosophy at the University of Maryland in 1963, and attended the University of Chicago’s postgraduate program in Philosophy from 1963-1965. In 1970, he received a graduate degree from the Royal Academy of Art, London. Highstein lived and worked in New York, until his death in 2013. -Courtesy Danese/Corey

  • Untitled Geometric Abstraction Minimalist painting unique signed renowned artist
    By Winston Roeth
    Located in New York, NY
An exquisite work of geometric abstraction by this celebrated artist Winston Roeth Untitled, ca. 1996 Pastel on handmade paper Hand signed on the front Frame included: Floated and framed in the original wood frame with uv plexiglass Measurements: Framed: 13.5"h x 12.75"w Artwork: 10"h x 9"w More about Winston Roeth: At first glance Roeth’s painted panels of wood or slate appear very simple: flat planes of colour that look a certain way, but which shift in the changing light or as you move around them. They are exquisitely painted in layers of velvety pigment and reveal their secrets slowly: quiet combinations that play gentle tricks on the eye - simultaneously drawing the viewer into dense voids and bouncing the gaze back with a vibrant intensity. Roeth’s compositions are distilled to this apparent simplicity through the most minimal ingredients. Sometimes a picture is divided into grids, a geometric harmony of lines and colours, so that the matt expanse of paint is broken up by shimmeringly luminous lines in a perfect balance of light, depth and colour. Others combine planes of a single colour with a contradictory border: an edge on which the picture turns. In a world so accustomed to instant gratification Winston Roeth’s paintings require and reward an unusual level of contemplation. Roeth is based in Beacon, New York...

  • Abstract painting listed artist Royal Society Arts Pink Purple Yellow Red Africa
    By Anthony Benjamin
    Located in Norfolk, GB
Anthony Benjamin, 'Untitled', watercolour and pastel on paper, image size 16.5cm x 23cm, framed size, 27.5cm x 33.75cm, signed and dated 2000 Provenance: From the Artist Estate A Gallery Certificate accompanies the painting Anthony Benjamin was a 20th Century abstract precisionist artist. Born in London in 1931 he was active throughout the second half of the 20th century. Experimental, hugely talented and obsessive, Benjamin moved fluidly between mediums and refused to be tied to any practise. He trained with the best, amongst others with Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris and was recognised by the Royal Society of the Arts, his pier group and leading Galleries and Institutions who displayed and collected his work. Anthony Benjamin was also daring. At at time when the art-world was fixated with the St Ives Group of artists, Benjamin, who was part of this group, chose to leave. Although adept at making St Ives abstractionism it did not sit naturally with him. He did not see value in its art. Instead he sought to replicate abstraction in nature and was inspired by others who had also mastered this craft such as the Composer Brian Eno, who he later collaborated with and Gnawa musicians of Morocco. A trained engineering draughtsmanship, Benjamins formally perfect artworks are always infused with an air of technical experimentation and a poetic response to the natural world. The artist was inspired by pattern and obsessed with process. He was a sculptor, printmaker, painter, draughtsman and used collage, canvas, brass, perspex, steel, paper and anything that inspired him. Throughout his career, Benjamin made monumental paintings. In the studio he thought, pondered and considered every move. It was during these periods of contemplation that he would make warm up paintings that were beautifully loose and almost the antithesis in process to his large works. However it was in these smaller watercolour paintings...
