About the Item

John Giorno LET IT COME LET IT GO, 2017 Watercolor on handmade paper Hand signed and dated by the artist on the back of the artwork. The frame features a die-cut window on the back to reveal the signature and date. Frame included Measurements: Frame: 26 x 26 x 2 inches Artwork: 20 x 20 inches Provenance: Donated by the artist to the Rubin Museum in 2017. Acquired from the Rubin Museum. “When you’re a Buddhist, you work with your mind in meditation, and with various practices you train the mind to realize its empty nature. Strangely, that’s the way I make poems! Maybe it’s developing the ability to see what arises in one’s mind, how it arises and its nature, that makes Buddhism very sympathetic to poets.” — John Giorno The cyclical message of this painting, Let it Come, Let it Go, emerges from Giorno’s long engagement with Tibetan Buddhism. An avid practitioner of the religion, Giorno draws both spiritual and linguistic inspiration from this tradition, yet the phrase is broad enough to encompass a plethora of associations such erotics, relationships, pain and politics. Since the 1970s, John Giorno has exhibited visual pieces generated from his poetry. Featuring short excerpts from his writing or phrases that have continually haunted him, these paintings, set on monochrome or rainbow backgrounds in their signature font, transform words to image. - Courtesy of Swiss Institute

Ronnie Cutrone Your Own Heart, 1987 Watercolor and Silkscreen on Paper Signed, dated and numbered from the edition of 7, with each work being unique. 40 × 30 inches Fantastic vintage classic 1980s Ronnie Cutrone Watercolor and Screenprint on Paper. From an edition of 7 with each work being unique. There is a very slight pinhole to the top corners which will frame out, otherwise in very good condition Unframed Ronnie Cutrone (July 10, 1948 – July 21, 2013) was an American pop artist known for his large-scale paintings of some of America's favorite cartoon characters, such as Felix the Cat, Pink Panther, Woody Woodpecker and No Glove No Love. Cutrone's paintings are colorful, lively, and less challenging than those of his contemporaries. As Andy Warhol's assistant at the Factory atop the Decker Building from 1972 until 1980, Cutrone worked with Warhol on paintings, prints, films, and other concepts, eventually co-opting Warhol's earliest work (pre-1960) as well as works by Roy Lichtenstein and others, until finally distilling those myriad influences into the style a few critics eventually labeled "Post-Pop." He exhibited at the Niveau Gallery in 1979 with a Scottish artist called Mike Gall who showed paintings of Snoopy, Mickey and Minnie mouse, the Pink Panther and also a small series of Peter Rabbit paintings...

  • "TRANSFIGURATION", abstract watercolor, landscape, trees, water, green, blue sky
    By Fleur Thesmar
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
TRANSFIGURATION is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a structured composition in tones of green, blue, umber, rose and teal. Bordering on abstraction and figuration, a landscape of trees and water and sky appears to open up symmetrically, possibly revealing a spirit. From Fleur Thesmar – "Inspired by a mathematical model, I painted this abstraction which slowly took on the form of a person. The shivering brushstrokes create a textured relief, while the person seems to emerge from and recede into the background." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. Her artistic practice is borne out of that close observation and shift in perspective, and has led to a number of successful gallery shows in the U.S. and internationally. Fleur Thesmar has shown at Beacon Gallery in Boston MA, 440 Gallery, Brooklyn NY, Old West Museum, Cheyenne WY, Belmont Art Gallery, Belmont MA...
