About the Item
This piece by Jonathan Higgins is a contemporary metalpoint drawing on white acrylic ground on paper. The drawing was made using silver, graphite and sanding. The artist's signature, title and date are on the back. Metalpoint is a Renaissance drawing technique that was used before the advent of the graphite pencil: the drawing is made with a metal wire held in a stylus, on a receptive surface on which traces of metal are left behind. Silver is traditionally used with this technique, though other soft metals can be used. The drawing surface can be paper, board, wood, etc. and is prepared with white or tinted gesso or gouache. Most metals used in metalpoint oxidize, which changes the tone and contrast of the drawing. This natural tarnishing/transformation continues gradually over time depending on environmental conditions. Higgins is included in the book "Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing: A Complete Guide To The Medium", published by Routledge in 2019.
The drawing is sold unframed. Framing recommendations: float mounted on museum board or within an 8-ply mat, in a quality, contemporary gallery frame.

His work bears the traces of lived experiences, exploring the possibilities of formal abstraction, and seeking an organic experience between space and time through painting and photography. “There is no longer a single idea explaining everything, but an infinite number of essences giving meaning to an infinite number of objects. The world comes to a stop, but also lights up.” ― Albert Camus...Category
